Smart Packing Tips for a Tropical Vacation

Leaving for a tropical vacation next week and I’ve started packing a bit – no one wants to haul down a huge luggage for a 5-day trip to the Mayan Riviera.  So, how appropriate is it that I should write a post on smart packing tips? Very.

Keeping in mind that I’m going somewhere with pretty much the opposite climate than Canada, I am super excited to wear dresses, shorts, tanks and bikinis – I am so sick of boots and sweaters right now…

Planning for a 5-day trip, there’s quite a lot on my list: summer dresses, flowy tee’s, jean shirt, warm knit, shorts and sandals… the list goes on.  The best thing to make sure you don’t over pack is to pre-plan your outfits and take pieces that can mix & match easily!  Take one or two pairs of shorts, a few summer dresses, couple cardigans, one chambray shirt and a few tops that you can easily wear with every piece.  VERSATILITY is KEY.

*TIP: For affordable & awesome bikinis (tops & bottoms as separates for you to mix and match as you like) during spring/summer months, my favorites places to buy them are as follows:

After the trip: Varadero, Cuba / Tuxpan Hotel

Yes, I’m back and my paleness is temporarily gone (hooray!)

It was such a great vacation because for 7 days, I was just chilling & relaxing by the beach eating, drinking, and making Cuban friends – a much needed getaway.  Here’s a recap on my trip and a review, hopefully it’ll be helpful to those thinking about travelling there!

Tuxpan Hotel (Click here for Tripadvisor Pg) – 20/30 min from the airport, beachfront, 2 pools, 3 restaurants, amazing staff & standard rooms.  I heard the rooms on 3rd & 4th floors are the best ones though!

Weather: The weathernetwork said it would be raining with thunder storms everyday (because it is hurricane season) but no thunderstorms at all.  Because it’s so hot there, it is expected for rain everyday but while we were there, there was a  min shower on about 2 of the days.  Almost everyday we had clear skies & amazing sunshine :)

Resort Rooms: Beds were clean and made everyday, pretty standard sized room and you get your own balcony.  it’s just outdated but what do you expect from a developing country? You don’t spend much time in the rooms (hopefully not…) so don’t expect a 5 star. Tip your maid everyday and she will go above and beyond to make your stay a great one.

Food: I was aware that Cuba isn’t the best for food, but I think we got lucky at the resort we stayed at because the food was pretty yummy! I stayed away from the pastas but stuck to fresh fish, stirfry beef and chicken.  The a la carte restaurant had better food as well – I had a shrimp dinner there.

Drinks: I took a travel mug with me as my friend told me to – the cups they pour your drinks in is a small cup.  This saves you from going to the bar every two seconds!

Beach: OMG! This was definitely the best part of the trip. The beach was a 5 min walk from our room. It was just perfect with white sand and crystal clear water.  Don’t drink it though, it’s super salty…. but it made my skin so clear!  A few workers from the resort approached us to sell us coconuts – definitely buy some.  You can get 2 coconuts for really cheap and it will hydrate you like no tomorrow!

Excursions: We did a safari excursion, which included horseback riding, bull riding, speedboating, lunch, cave swimming, and snorkeling in the coral reefs – this is for the whole day.  It is worth the $$$ because it’s so fun and you get to drive a jeep!

Overall, I loved the experience – both at the resort and outside the resort as it opened my eyes to how the locals live there (through driving around with the excursion).  They really appreciate your tip and any gifts so take some toiletries and clothing/shoes/makeup that you don’t use!

If you’re thinking about going to Cuba, don’t hesitate and go enjoy the experience as it is affordable and relaxing.  I suggest going to the resort I stayed at since I had such a good time there!  We booked with Tripcentral.ca and they were SO helpful and accommodating so i want to mention them here :)

Online Shopping 101 & My Favorites Sites

I’ve been an online shopping fanatic for a while (in addition to just being a shopaholic in general) – I really need to stop!  I’ve been good lately at resisting the temptations.. until this month.

This post isn’t to blame the online shopping world because I am totally a supporter of it – it’s to share with you guys some tips to a successful online shopping experience and all the places I find the best DEALS & value :) Keep in mind that I use online shopping to purchase online clothing, accessories and beauty products – no electronics or big purchases like that.

Sure, with online shopping, there are some negatives such as:

  • not being able to try the product
  • not seeing product first hand
  • exchange/return hassel when you can’t take it back to a physical store

BUT, there are the positives:

  • most of the time, there are discount coupons & promotions
  • there’s nothing more exciting than opening that package
  • most places allow for exchanges/returns in stores
  • shipping is fast these days and i mean FAST
  • accessibility & browsing EVERYTHING the store is to offer (sometimes, in physical stores, they run out of stock)
  • less time wasted walking around the store, you can see everything with just a click of a mouse

As you can tell from the positive/negative lists above, for me – the positives outweigh the negatives.  The best thing about online shopping is that there’s no pushy salesperson pressuring you and it’s so convenience – you can shop pretty much anytime you have wifi.

So, here’s some of my favorites online shops:

There are probably a lot of people out there hesitant to try shopping online because of a numerous reasons, so here’s some tips to somewhat help you get the best online shopping experience:

  1. Only use legitimate & trustworthy website
  2. For sizes, since you can’t try it on, I usually like to purchase when I can see the product on a model.  I also go for brands I’m familiar with so I know how they usually fit on my body
  3. Lots of research on reviews on the product, especially if it’s makeup & skincare
  4. Search for discount codes & coupons
  5. Always keep a tab on everything you order with its confirmation number

ANTM Live Event in Toronto

The past Saturday, my friend and I attended the ANTM Live Show Event at the Metro Convention Centre.  We were excited for a fun tradeshow with lots of vendors related to beauty, fashion, health etc.  To be honest, it could have been a lot better (they had a very bad turnout) but I enjoyed the complimentary services at the Beauty Bar and a couple of fashion shows.

We didn’t stay there for long as it was crowded with teeny boppers and we were getting hungry.. HA!

Some pictures (i know it’s bad quality – they were taken on my blackberry):
